Kreg Innovative Woodworking Solutions
In the Beginning
Kreg Tool was founded after Craig Sommerfeld created a U-shaped single-hole jig to conceal holes in kitchen cabinets that he was building in response to a request from Kathie Sommerfeld. The jig became popular at woodworking shows, leading to significant success. During his high school years, Todd Sommerfeld joined his father on a trip to a woodworking tradeshow in St. Louis, which had a profound impact on him. It ignited Todd's interest in promoting the Kreg Jig and signaled the beginning of his engagement with the company. Following its rapid expansion beyond the confines of the Sommerfelds' home basement and backyard shop, Kreg relocated to a newly built 5,000 square foot facility in Huxley, Iowa.
From the Foundation
The January edition of Wood magazine highlighted the Kreg Jig on its cover. This significant breakthrough enhanced the visibility of the Kreg Jig and raised awareness of pocket-hole joinery, which undoubtedly contributed to its widespread adoption as a technique used in numerous woodworking shops today. With the introduction of the K2000 jig, the manufacturing of jigs was revolutionized forever. This model was constructed from injection-molded plastic, rather than metal, resulting in faster and less expensive production, increased durability, and the incorporation of additional convenient features. And in 2003, Kreg expanded to home improvement stores all over the nation. Following its national expansion and acquisition of the Fasttrack tools patents, Kreg Tool was able to enhance the lineup with improvements and redesigns.
Employee Owned
By appointing Tony Hogan as the COO, Kreg underwent a transition from being family-operated to being led by professional leadership. This transformation continued as Hogan progressed to become the President and CEO, and the implementation of EOS further altered the company's growth trajectory. In recognition of the significance of staff involvement in the company's finances and the value of enabling them to make autonomous long-term decisions that would affect their sphere of influence, Todd Sommerfeld bought out his parents' stock and introduced an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). As of today, Kreg Tool is 20% owned by its employees.
An International Affair
Kreg Tool expanded its global presence by establishing a joint venture in Germany, resulting in the inception of a new company called "Kreg Europe." With a primary focus on the Kreg brand, this entity is dedicated to selling Kreg's line of products in Europe, catering to the specific needs and requirements of European markets. The establishment of Kreg Europe is a strategic move that reinforces Kreg's commitment to meeting the demands of customers across the globe while further expanding the company's reach and influence in the woodworking industry. This joint venture also enables Kreg to leverage local resources, knowledge, and expertise to better tailor its products and services to European consumers and accelerate growth in the region. By extending its footprint into Europe, Kreg is strengthening its position as a leading provider of innovative and high-quality woodworking solutions worldwide.
